Dear Members,

Two of our members from C.Chess had joined the Republic Polytechnic’s Individual C.Chess competition held on 18/10/08 and 19/10/08. Despite having to pit against people of different schools ranging from Secondary schools, Polytechnic, JC and even University, they have done a spectacular job by showing the spirit of not giving up despite the difference in gap between the players. The players participating in this competition are Weimin and Wen Bin. In the end Wen bin got 7th place and Weimin got 18th place among 36 participants, thanks to the supporters who came and support us on Sunday despite their busy schedule for the preparation for the recruitment drive. Even though they are not able to come in the top 3 rankings, they have gain experiences and knowledge which will benefit in their future competitions. Once again lets congrats both of them for making NP proud.

New Semester

Greetings to all,

Hope you are all well rested and raring to go. The new semester is starting and along with it Chess Club activities. Here, we'll give a short briefing on the activities which would be happening in the upcoming semester.

First and foremost, we look forward to the most important competitive event of this semester. Weiqi (GO) POL-ITE Games held on the first week of school reopen at Nanyang Polytechnic. Do lend your support to the team.

We'll also be looking forward to a Recruitment Drive, NP Chess Showdown (our annual competition organized by NP) and Club Shirt.

Of course, there'll also be training as we prepare towards achieving greater Chess honours in all the semesters to come. Enjoy and let's usher in the new semester together.

Committee Changes

Greetings to all members,

Here's a short update to keep everyone informed of the changes in the current committee of the NP Chess Club. With effect from August 1, there have been a number of promotions for existing Club Members.

1) Weisong, formerly the Captain of the Weiqi Division has assumed the Vice-Presidency of the Chess Club.
2) Samuel, formerly the Vice-Captain of the International Chess Division has been promoted to Captain of the International Chess Division.
3) Wen Bin, formerly the Vice-Captain of the Weiqi Division has also been promoted to Captain of the Weiqi Division.
4) Teck Hian, has also assumed the Weiqi's Division Vice-Captaincy.
5) Wei Min, who has been understudying under Logistics has now officially been appointed the Logistic Officer of the NP Chess Club.

We congratulate the following people for their appointments and have absolute confidence they will bring the Chess Club to a whole new level. We will be also confirming the appointment of the current vacant positions and creating 3 new positions in the following semester.

Here, I'll also like to thank Kok Hwee, Shengda, Yi Wen for their service to the Chess Club and for the multiple competitive achievements they have earned during their time of service. They left the positions because of semestrial attachment and third year commitments and here, we wish them all the best in their chess & academic development.

The CChess POL-ITE players had won a silver for the POL-ITE games. It was a close shave that we might get a bronze as most of us reached the 10 minutes limit. Presidential Address:

I'll like to give my heartest congratulations to the Chinese Chess team who competed in the CC Cup on Saturday 13 July.

The team of 4 members pitted themselves among many other schools, most notably Jurong JC and Temasek JC. In spite of the stiff competition, they came out 2nd losing out to Temasek JC based on board points rather than game points.

This achievement marks a new high for the Chinese Chess Division exemplify their diligence in their training. I'm more than happy to see their efforts paying off and would thus like to extend my warmest praise to the 4 members.

I look forward to witness greater honours coming from this group of outstanding individuals.

POL-ITE INTERNATIONAL CHESS

Dear members,

As you probably have noted, there is constant mention of POL-ITE Games. Now, for the first year members, you may question what is the POL-ITE Games and you may also confuse it with IVP.

Just to clarify, IVP is a thing of the past and now, the event is called POL-ITE. POL-ITE is the most important event for the NP Chess Club. This event is a team event comprising of 5 main players and 4 reserves. In other words, a total of 9 players will be drafted into the school team. All school players will receive a school jacket and representative points from the school. Apart from a top 3 finish, if a team secures the silver medal, it will entitle all members to the Half-Colours award at the awards ceremony. A gold medal will ensure the team the Full Colours award.

Everyone should probably be aware of the International Chess POL-ITE held from 2nd July - 4th July. For members who do not have the chance of participating in the POL-ITE Games, you may want to have a look at what it is like.

Time: 6.30pm - 8.30pm
Date: 2nd - 4th July 2008

Everyone is welcomed to support the International Chess team in their surge for glory. Naturally, the conduct of a Chess Player is expected. Competition rules apply as well as competition conduct and respect for the competition. Hence, while everyone is invited to this event, NP Chess Club reserves the right to bar anyone who disrupts the event from ALL competitions. (Eg: Noise level, loudly commenting on the game in the presence of the players, making a nuisance of yourselves, etc...)

I strongly believe though, most of us have been through sufficient competitions to know the general conduct expected. Do come and support the teams...

IVP for all 3 divisions would be set between the duration of July and August. Members please prefer for it. While it may seem very far away, believe me, experience tells me its very near. Our objective this year is to secure the Gold Medal and I hope every school team player put in their best foot.

It is my wish that all players train doubly hard during this period. I hope seniors take the lead and help push the juniors. Winning is all a matter of desire, patiance and discipline. I believe everyone has such qualities... and I strongly believe you guys can unlock them.

Learn from the examples of the former Vice President and President, both in terms of improving their chess as well as their management previously and presently. I hope no one will rest on their laurels during this period.

Lastly, the Chess Club Constitution is out and this is applicable to all members and past seniors (so long as you're in Chess Club premises). All the best for your common test.

Camp Genesis is over. I thank all those present. Nonetheless, I do not wish for a camp to overshadow the JJ Cup which CChess members took part in. I congratulate Shengda for reaching a 6th in overall standing in the individual category over more than 60 players and Cassidy, Tyron, Clement and Weimin for achieving a 7th in Team Category.

I'm sure, CChess will progress even further in the next competition and hope all 3 divisions work hard to achieve greater honours.

Greetings all members,

First and foremost, my apologies for such a long inactive period. The website is currently undergoing renovations and hence, the lack of updates. We are in the midst of fixing this problem and we urge your patiance and understanding.

The new semester has finally started marking the official end to the previous reign and the start of a new one.

I'll kick-off my reign with an official explanation why we address ourselves as NP Chess and not Intellectual Competitive Games. Intellectual Competitive Games was a name elected by the previous stand-in committee. The name was unofficially approved by our advisor however, this was done prior to the knowledge of a newly formed CCA - Board Games Club. Because our new name clashed with this Board Games Club, we were presented with a choice of either a merger or to not change our name. The 2008 NP Chess Committee elected to remain as NP Chess and thus while we keep our logo as ICG Chess (International, Chinese, Go), our official name has remained as NP Chess.

Some highlights of NP Chess under its new management includes:
Interaction Day
The once a month interaction day where activities have already been mapped for the entire semester by our Welfare Officer, Wendy. Please participate.. under the current leadership, your divisional budget depends on your attendance.

Competitive Trainings
In addition, competitive players can look forward to a myraid of competitions throughout the entire semester in preparation for IVP. A rating system along with pre-arranged friendly games have been organised for Team A and Team B to gauge standards and improvements.

Competitive players, do note that cca points are granted for all competitions commissioned as a school activity. Hence, do not feel shy at claiming your right and do bug your captains for points should you rightfully earn them. Understanding that membership points are grossly insufficient, there has been a significant amounts of competitions organized by each division to provide members with ample points, along with other Chess Activities. Of course, 75% attendance is a must!

Recreational players don't fret. NP Chess provides sufficient points for all members. As long as members contribute to NP Chess on a non-competitive basis, we provide points as well. Eg: Committee positions, special planning activities like CCA Fiesta, NP Chess Showdown, designing of NP Chess Website, etc. So long as your contributions are in line with NP Chess vision, I give you my assurance, there'll be sufficient points earning opportunities. Having said that, it should be pretty apparent what a profit-oriented person I am... so no free-loaders okay?

Camp Genesis
As usual, a bonding camp would be organized to welcome our new members. This camp is compulsory for all NP Chess members. It's pretty important in terms of getting to know people from different divisions... with a present member strength of 40 members (not including our new members), there are lots of people in NP Chess, lots of whom members don't know about. Camp Genesis marks the beginning of everything new... let's make this camp a successful one together.

ICG is experiencing its first Chinese New Year. The fact is, officially we're still Chess Club, although our name-change will become official really soon... Well, at this point in time, everything is red... including those troublesome organizational 'red-tapes'.

No worries, a formal proposal will be submitted at the end of this month and hopefully, when they grant the name-change, they'll grant me a change in title to Emperor as well. I was joking. I don't know about most of you, but personally, I'd say this Chinese New Year was a rewarding one. It's probably my first time having a good meal with most of the seniors... I just hope it's not the last. ICG reunion dinner featured a spread of food and Chess Club year 3s... I take this space to thank the seniors for taking time-out from their very busy schedule to join me along with some of the other members for a hearty dinner.

Special thanks to Jason (whom is already very free), Mervyn, Kai Rong and Jie Ren... of course, ICG also appreciates the additional effort made by ICG members to attend the dinner, understanding that most of us no longer have any lessons.

Strangely for Chess, there's not much well-wishes applicable. I mean, much as I'd like to wish everyone 财源滚滚 or 满地黄金... these sound more appropriate for Gambling Club... but hey, they say Bridge is a form of Intellectual Game so who knows?

Before anyone starts complaining this space is wilting, I thought I better post something up.

Yesterday was a special day for me, but that's personal... my objective of blogging was to express my delight at the bond which ICG IChess examplified, the initiative and that something Xtra which Ngee Ann has always tried to emphasize. It's a little thing, but these are those little things which builds a sense of belonging to everyone in ICG...

Perhaps, I am not sounding like myself, or perhaps I'm blogging because my birthday is being celebrated and I'm happy... but if I'm spouting rubbish, why bother about chalets, camps and interaction day?

This tradition within the ranks of the IChess division was initiated last year. It's costly, but then again, with the entire division actively supporting the cause, it becomes meaningful. Hopefully, this spirit of unity will spread throughout ICG... maybe, it has already exist and I'm slow to it... if that's the case, wonderful.

I take this space to thank the entire IChess Division for this fine arrangement and the gifts.

In any case, everyone, do remember that 25 Jan, Friday is interaction day. Do remember to turn up... hate to say this but, attendance on all interaction days constitute to 25% of your attendance!

Happy New Year ICG!

To all members...

Chess Club has marked a remarkable year and ends 2007 with a name change - Intellectual Competitive Games. Throughout this year, there's been numerous activities, achievements and new friends.

It's now my pleasure to highlight some of the keys activities which we've done over the past year and let's soak in all of 2007 before we look towards 2008.

Chess Club began this year with astounding numbers of membership, something not achieved in the last 3 years. Thus, kudos to the committee led by our standing Chairman, Jason Huang, and his administration. Membership and bonding grew stronger through the camps, activities organized under Jason's able administration... one of those things we'll remember - the trip to Sentosa!

One personal take-away would have been the NP ChessShown which was my first adventure at organizing an event. It's the first time Chess Club outsourced it's event to IS project groups and I must say, I was pretty satisfied with their performance.

Congratulations to all winners...

Moving on, we'll also be reminded about IVP which saw the International Chess Division clinching silver and Chinese Chess and Weiqi Division clinching bronze. Next year, International Chess would represent ICG in the Appreciation Night where they will be presented with the Half-Colours Award. Well-done!

Finally, to soak in the ambience and before the curtains fall, buffet at Carlton Hotel saw a spread of International Cuisines.

3) Committed and able leaders to propel ICG forward.

Greetings and hi everyone!

Finally a new space and domain for all members... in particular those who have been sorely disappointed by the 'already deceased' npchessclub.blogspot.com. Nonetheless, let's dry up the tears and rejoice in this season of giving...

I give you this new space where we once again can congregate wireless... so let's all once again take off from where we left and make this space happening.
